Once home to the Diegueos Native American tribe, Poway is now a prosperous bedroom community of almost 50,000 residents. The city retains its rustic charm and residents refer to it as, "The City in the Country". Poway residents still find arrowheads, spear points, grinding stones and pottery along the creek. Hikers can view pictographs dating back to the 1500s on Poway boulders. The name itself either means "here, where the waters meet", or "the two little valleys".
Poway property owners are ecologically minded, the 700-acre Blue Sky Reserve is one of the California’s most popular wildlife reservations. Although it is open to the public, motorized vehicles and mountain bikes are banned. The National Arbor Day Foundation has named Poway a Tree City U.S.A. There are over 60 miles of hiking, biking and riding trails winding throughout Poway and the annual Tour De Poway Mountain Bike Ride offers fun for all levels. Many parts of Poway are still zoned for horses and homes are often on large lots. Old Poway Park is home to a vintage train and hosts craft shows, farmer’s markets and blacksmith demonstrations.
The Lake Poway Recreation Area is a favorite spot for picnics with a 900-square foot pavilion that includes restrooms and a kitchen. There are gazebos, a softball field, volleyball court, a boat dock and a full service snack bar complete with bait and tackle for fishing. There are eight campsites, an amphitheater, restrooms, and horse corrals at the bottom of the dam. The campground is only accessible via horseback or by hiking one mile in on a moderately difficult trail. Poway is also home to the Poway Center for the Performing Arts.
Poway schools are among the best in California. Not only is the high school strong academically, but the marching band and jazz bands frequently wins top honors as does the wrestling team.
